ASPPB’s Director of Public Affairs continues to lead as an example of vision and servant leadership

The Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards (ASPPB)® is honored to count on exemplary servant leaders like Alex Siegel, J.D., Ph.D., who, through his steadfast work and dedication, continues to support the Association’s mission, vision, and values. His work recently earned a high-level recognition from the American Psychological Association: the Practice State Leadership Conference Distinguished Leadership Award, presented at the PSLC conference in Washington, D.C.

The award recognizes Dr. Siegel for his profound contributions to shaping psychological practices at the state and national levels and for strengthening psychologists’ ability to serve the public, supporting ASPPB’s member jurisdictions in fulfilling their responsibility of public protection.

“ASPPB is fortunate to count on leaders of the caliber of Alex who, through his steadfast work and discipline, embodies the best our profession has to offer,” said Mariann Burnetti-Atwell, PsyD, ASPPB Chief Executive Officer. “He is an inspiration and a legend for so many when it comes to serving with integrity, joyful servant leadership, and vision. We congratulate him on his achievements.”

Career Highlights

Dr. Siegel, former ASPPB President (2007-2008), had a visionary approach to telepsychology that began before telehealth became integral to the practice of psychology. In 2011, he joined the ASPPB Telepsychology Task Force, helping develop standards for technology in psychological services. When the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted in-person care, that early work proved pivotal, enabling psychologists nationwide to continue serving patients during a mental health crisis.

Through his work with PSYPACT and related initiatives, Dr. Siegel has been instrumental in advancing telepsychology legislation across 40 states, expanding access to care and modernizing professional mobility.

His contributions expand beyond telepractice. He continues to lead as ASPPB’s Director of Professional Affairs and serves as a key liaison to psychological associations nationwide. Dr. Siegel is the chair of ASPPB’s Model Act and Regulations Committee, work that reflects a career defined by advocacy, foresight, and service. On behalf of ASPPB, he continues to conduct training to educate licensing boards and associations on evolving regulations. He also served 13 years on the Pennsylvania State Board of Psychology, including eight as Chair, guiding complex regulatory decisions with steady leadership.  Dr. Siegel’s contributions have been recognized previously, including the Karl F. Heiser Award
