Awards

Since the 1990s, the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards (ASPPB) has recognized individuals and entities for outstanding contributions to the organizations that regulate and enhance the practice of psychology at the regional, national, and international levels.

Asher R. Pacht Distinguished Service Award

The award was renamed in honor of Asher R. Pacht, Ph.D., in 2003.  Dr. Pacht’s entire career is one of distinction, including serving as President of the Wisconsin Psychological Association on two occasions, Chair of the Wisconsin Board of Examiners in Psychology for many years, and receiving various awards from regulatory bodies in psychology.  He served as president of ASPPB in 1992-93 and was the heart and soul of the former ASPPB Foundation.  He was instrumental in drafting the first ASPPB Supervision Guidelines and Chaired the Committee on Education and Training for Credentialing. He also developed model language for statutes, rules, regulations, and passing points.   An individual may only receive this award once.

This award may be given in recognition of extraordinary individual contributions to ASPPB.  It may be awarded to one individual per year.

Ming Fisher Board Administrator/Registrar Award

The award may be given in recognition of contributions to psychologists and psychology, demonstrated by dedication to licensing and regulation, an administrative approach that has been consistently fair and respectful, and stellar service to a board or college and ASPPB for at least three years. It may be awarded to one individual per year.

This award honors Ming Fisher, former Executive Director for the Ohio Board of Psychology.  Ms. Fisher was awarded the title of ASPPB Fellow in 1990 and received the Roger C. Smith Award in 1998.  Having worked for the Ohio Board for 30 years, Ms. Fisher issued the license for almost every psychologist and school psychologist from 1973 until her retirement in June 2001. Ms. Fisher was also the first recipient of the Distinguished Administrative Award from the Ohio Psychological Association.  To mark Ms. Fisher’s retirement in 2001, the ASPPB Nominations Committee created this new award in her name, and she was named the first award recipient.

In 2023, the award was renamed to the Ming Fisher Board Administrator/Registrar’s Service Award. An individual can receive this award only once.

Norma P. Simon Regulatory Service Award

The Normal P. Simon Regulatory Service Award may be given in recognition of significant contributions to ASPPB and the regulation of psychology at the national or international level.  Current and past contributions are equally important. It may be awarded to one individual per year. 

This award was originally named for the late Morton Berger of New York, the President of ASPPB (then AASPB) in 1975-76.  Dr. Berger’s efforts had so much impact on credentialing at the national level that this award was created following their untimely death in 1988. 

In 2001, the award was renamed in honor of Norma P. Simon, Ed.D., former member of the New York State Board of Psychology (1979-1989), President of ASPPB (1991-1992), and former chair of the APA Ethics Committee and of the APA Board of Professional Affairs.

In 2023,  it was renamed to the Norma P. Simon Regulatory Service Award. An individual can receive this award only once.

ASPPB Distinguished Jurisdiction Award 

The ASPPB Distinguished Jurisdiction Award may be given to one jurisdiction per year on behalf of the ASPPB Board of Directors to recognize contributions to the Association and the regulation of psychology.

The President’s Award was established in 1991 and was given that year to the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists in recognition of that board’s extraordinary support of the Association in the production of two ethical videos. In 2016, the award was changed to the Distinguished Jurisdiction Award. It is not given every year but is awarded at the discretion of the ASPPB Board.

ASPPB State and Provincial Service Award

This award may be given in recognition of special contributions to promote the licensing and/or certification of psychologists in a jurisdiction of the U.S. or Canada; current and past contributions are equally important. It may be awarded to one individual per year.

The award was initially named for the late Roger C. Smith of Oklahoma, the President of ASPPB (then AASPB) in 1974-75 and a tireless committee member.  He also served as a member and chair of the Oklahoma Board, president of the Oklahoma Psychological Association, and was active on several APA committees.  Following Dr. Smith’s untimely death in 1980, this award was established in Dr. Smith’s name and then, in 2004, was changed in name to the ASPPB State and Provincial Service Award.

ASPPB Fellows

This award recognizes outstanding service to ASPPB and the field of professional psychology regulation and licensing/certification. It may be presented to a maximum of three individuals per year. 

This is an honorific category. The first class of Fellows was named 1990. An individual may only receive this award once.
