Tyrone, GA, June 26, 2025 –The Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards (ASPPB)® is marking a major milestone in the history of professional psychology licensure. First launched in 1965, the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP)® remains the most widely used and trusted tool for assessing readiness to practice psychology in the United States and Canada.

Currently used by 66 ASPPB member jurisdictions, the EPPP has become the gold standard in high-stakes professional testing for psychology. In 2024 alone, more than 8,000 candidates sat for the exam. Its strong psychometric foundation, consistency, and reliability have made it a cornerstone of public protection in the field for nearly six decades.

“As we recognize 60 years of the EPPP, we’re proud of its legacy—and focused on its future,” said ASPPB President, Hugh D. Moore, Ph.D. “The exam has always been about supporting our member jurisdictions in making fair, consistent, and informed licensure decisions.”

In response to input from member boards, educators, and the broader psychology community, ASPPB’s Board of Directors voted to pause implementation of a previous decision requiring both EPPP (Part 1–Knowledge) and EPPP (Part 2–Skills) by 2026. While Part 2 remains available to jurisdictions that wish to use it, ASPPB has shifted its focus to developing a new, single-session exam that assesses baseline competency at the time of licensing.

Development of the new integrated exam is already underway. ASPPB has launched a series of virtual town halls to gather input from across the profession. The first two—focused on regulatory boards and the education/training community—were held in April and June. Two additional town halls, scheduled for later this year, will focus on students and licensed psychologists.

“This is about listening, collaborating, and ensuring the next phase of the EPPP reflects the needs of those it serves,” said ASPPB CEO, Mariann Burnetti-Atwell, PsyD. “We’re constantly building upon a strong foundation with a clear mission: protecting the public while supporting a high-quality, cohesive licensure process across North America.”
